The greatest thing we do is improve care for those that survive the unimaginable.

Refugee Health YYC is a Research, Innovation, and Education platform at the University of Calgary's O'Brien Institute for Public Health.

We are closely partnered with the Mosaic Refugee Health Clinic in Calgary as an academic platform for our clinicians who provide care for newly arrived refugees and asylum claimants for up to two years.

2024 Jean-Pierre Despins Award Winner: Dr. Annalee Coakley

RHYYC would like to congratulate our very own co-founder, Dr. Annalee Coakley, for being selected as the recipient of the 2024 Jean-Pierre Despins Award.

The award is named in memory of the late Dr. Jean-Pierre Despins, who served as the CFPC President in 1995/96 and as Chair of the Research and Education Foundation Board of Directors from 1999 to 2000. The award "recognizes a CFPC family physician member identified as an outstanding advocate and public spokesperson for family medicine and/or family physicians and their patients and who has demonstrated many of the qualities that Dr. Despins embodied and valued including statesmanship, leadership, diplomacy, courage of conviction, humour, compassion, and consideration of others."

Congratulations, Dr. Coakley!

Deyana Altahsh Med School Acceptance

We want to congratulate our very own Deyana Altahsh on her recent acceptance into medical school! Starting as a Community Scholar within the team, Deyana has shown her dedication and passion for bridging the gap between refugees and healthcare providers, which led her to her current position as a Research Assistant within the team. Since then, she has been a tremendous advocate for refugee patients and presented at the 2023 Northwest SPOR Collaborative Forum Annual Conference, where she won the 2023 Collaborative Forum EDI Award.

Nour Hassan WHO Internship

We at Refugee Health YYC are thrilled to celebrate our very own Nour Hassan on her incredible achievement of securing an internship with the World Health Organization, focusing on migration and health. This prestigious opportunity is a testament to her dedication and passion for improving the lives of refugees.

Nour has already made significant contributions to the field, particularly through her work with the Yazidi population in Calgary. Her published manuscript, titled "Sociodemographic Characteristics and Mental and Physical Health Diagnoses of Yazidi Refugees Who Survived the Daesh Genocide and Resettled in Canada," highlights the critical issues facing this resilient community and underscores her commitment to advancing refugee health.

Your hard work, Nour, continues to inspire us all. We are incredibly proud of you and can't wait to see the impact you'll make on a global scale!

Refugee Care App

The clinical information contained in this application is a consensus from the physician group working at the Calgary Refugee Health Program, and is based on years of experience treating most of the refugees and refugee claimants in Calgary. It is meant to be used as a clinical resource to guide Canadian family physicians through the initial screening and management of newly arrived refugees and refugee claimants.

While these recommendations apply mainly to refugee patients, they could also be useful for physicians seeing newly arrived immigrants.
